The coffee break and the session: what alertness does

A coffee break in the middle of a session

Finland drinks more coffee per head than any other country, and the coffee break is the most natural interruption in a working day. Around a gambling session it has a use – but not the one it is usually sold for. Coffee has no effect on a single spin. It has an effect on how carefully decisions are made and on when the evening breaks.

What alertness affects

Fatigue weakens judgement and self-control. In table games this shows directly: a tired player makes more departures from basic strategy, and every departure adds to the house edge. Slots contain no decisions to get wrong – there fatigue shows in the length of the session and in the stake creeping upwards.

Caffeine improves attention in the short term. It does not change the return to player, the hit frequency or the probability of any spin.

A break that actually breaks

Method Works Why
Coffee in the kitchen, phone left on the table Yes Interrupts both the eye and the hand
Another tab on the same screen No The session continues, only the content changes
An alarm on the phone Yes It does not negotiate
”One more spin and then a break” No The break moves for as long as the game continues

A practical rhythm

  1. Decide the amount and the finishing time before the first spin.
  2. Set an alarm about half an hour ahead.
  3. Write down during the break how much has gone. The figure is forgotten quickly when it is not displayed.
  4. Stop at the agreed point regardless of whether you are ahead.

Questions and answers

Does coffee improve results?

No. It may improve attention, which helps you stay with a plan. Results follow from the game's numbers, not from drinks.

What about alcohol during a session?

Alcohol weakens judgement and the ability to hold a limit at the same time. It is a clearly larger risk factor than any technical choice in the game.

How often should a break be taken?

About every half hour is a workable starting point. What matters most is that the break is agreed in advance rather than left to judgement in the moment.
