Sisu and gambling: how far persistence reaches

Sisu and gambling – the limits of persistence

Sisu is a virtue where effort changes the outcome: practice improves performance, repair improves the work. In gambling that condition does not hold, which is exactly why persistence turns against a player at the table.

Why ”one more spin” is the wrong place

The best-known error is the gambler's fallacy: the belief that a long losing run makes a win more likely. It does not. Every spin is drawn separately, and sisu does not change how a random number generator behaves. Two hundred spins without a result are not a debt the game repays.

A longer session does not improve the odds. It increases the amount wagered – and the theoretical loss grows with it.

The price of the game in numbers

Game House edge Theoretical loss per €1,000 wagered
Blackjack with basic strategy about 0.5% about €5
European roulette 2.70% €27
Slot with 96% RTP 4.00% €40
American roulette 5.26% €53

These are long-run averages. A single evening can land far from them in either direction, but the direction is always the same.

What sisu is good for

  1. Setting the limit in advance: the amount and the time, before the first spin.
  2. Holding that limit when it is boring. The hardest moment is not a loss but a win, after which continuing feels reasonable.
  3. Stopping mid-session.
  4. Choosing the game: the return to player is in the info panel, and checking it takes half a minute.

What does not work

  • Doubling the stake after a loss. After ten losses in a row the stake is 1,024 times the first one, and the table limit arrives before that.
  • A ”hot game”. Previous spins say nothing about the next one.
  • Chasing losses. It raises stakes exactly when judgement is weakest.

Questions and answers

Does persistence help you win?

No. It helps you stay with a plan, but it changes the probability of no spin.

Is one game better for a persistent player?

In games where decisions matter, correct play reduces the house edge. That is skill, not sisu.

When should you stop?

When the stake rises after a loss, when the session runs past the agreed time, or when money set aside for something else goes into play.
